Reading about the history, view photos from the past and try to imagine how it was then, and perhaps what might have - save for some personalities larger than life - is clearly food for thought.

Such are my thoughts as I research the history of my hometown. I wonder how he would have gone Paignton if two prominent millionaires, one U.S. and one from Liverpool had not come live there.

Isaac Singer was determined, efficient and generous with its employees and has done so much to put Torbay on the map of his time. He was a man with a mission, and his womanizing was famous, he was probably more that the mistresses fancy cakes and buns it set for children part-time employees. in the "flag". - His beloved known Oldway.

The other millionaire made its mark in the early twentieth century. Considering that Isaac Singer was flamboyant and outgoing and lavished great life, this man was completely the opposite, shy, quiet and self confessed misogynist. He had a vision that many and growing, and always brings crowds to date. But not without a few missteps on path.

He began to breed exhibition and finches, Wyandotte poultry, pigeons Cropper blue and black, and even Dutch rabbits.

His name was Herbert Whitley, the founder of what is now known as Paignton Zoo Environmental Park .. Without doubt one of the most popular attractions in Torbay. His vision was to create a collection of flora and fauna from around the world.

He praised Primley house and bought a mansion with his real large area of family Belfield. Local people noticed wooded buildings and structures begin to appear, one resembling a racetrack stand it was understood to be said. What was it exactly, the local fraternity were curious and it would not be very long before they found.

The move to Paignton gave Herbert the chance to buy and raise animals endangered .. He was happy to receive the monkeys first time in 1910 and 1911 and the first exotic bird Primley, a pair of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos which should be the foundation of his ornithological collection.
